Skerper Soft Arkansas natural sharpening stone on wooden base. Soft Arkansas is the coarsest of the sharpening stones from the Arkansas collection. In terms of grain size the stone can be compared to an American 400-600 grit synthetic sharpening stone. Perfect when sharpening a blunt edge. The wooden base slightly elevates the sharpening surface to make sure you have enough room as you sharpen your knife. The sharpening stone can be used to sharpen various tools: from kitchen knives and outdoor knives to wood working tools and razors.

## About Skerper Arkansas

The Skerper Arkansas natural sharpening stones come from the mountains of the American state carrying the same name. It is the only place in the world where you will find novaculite, a mineral that these sharpening stones are made of. The stones are mined, cut to size and expertly flattened. Thanks to the special cryptocrystalline structure each stone will finely remove material. In addition, it maintains its shape and effective sharpening function for a long time, without having to lap or level the stone in the meantime. Because these are real natural products each stone will have its natural discolouration. As a result the stone can differ in terms of colour from the one on the picture.

## Grain size and hardness

There are various versions of these Arkansas stones, with up to five different grain sizes. The grain sizes of the stone is measured based on the hardness. The harder the stone, the finer the stone. In terms of grain size the Soft Arkansas stone can be compared to an American 400-600 grit synthetic sharpening stone. After that you have the Hard Arkansas (800-1000 grit), Hard Black Arkansas (2000-3000 grit) and Surgical Black Arkansas (4000-6000 grit). The Translucent Arkansas stone are the finest stones, in terms of grain size comparable to 8000-10.000 grit synthetic sharpening stones. From restoring to polishing the edge: with Skerper Arkansas natural stones you will have the right sharpening stone for each step in the sharpening process.

## How to use the Skerper Arkansas natural sharpening stones

When sharpening with Arkansas sharpening stones we recommend using [oil](/en/pt/-skerper-premium-honing-oil-sa01.htm). This decreases friction and prevents sharpening residue from accumulating. You can also use water, instead of oil. Experience, however, has taught use that the sharpening results are less and cleaning the stone will be more difficult. Especially if you have been using oil in the past.

The stones are splash & go: a couple drops of oil and you are good to go. As such you don't have to wait for the stones to absorb the moisture. Position the knife at the right angle and move both sides evenly over the stone until you have reached the desired result. You will notice that the stone becomes darker when you use oil during the sharpening process. This is a completely natural process that won't affect the ability of the stone. The wooden base ensures that, as you sharpen your knife, your hands won't come into contact with your workstation. As such you can move more freely without your knuckles scraping over the base of your table or counter tops. When you finish sharpening all you need to do is use a cloth to remove the oil from the stone.
