Power banks are often enhanced with a lithium-ion-battery. The terms used to describe the capacity of this type of battery are Ah or mAh: ampere hour or milliampere hour. The average modern smartphone has a battery of approximately 2000-2500 mAh. With a 5000 mAh powerbank you should, as such, be able to charge it twice!

However, don’t forget that both batteries, the ones in a smartphone and a power bank, are protected against under and over-charging. As such, a smartphone with a 2500 mAh battery will always have, for instance, 300 mAh left. Which means you only need 2200 mAh to charge it. At the same time a 5000 mAh power bank will, theoretically speaking, have 500 mAh left which means that not the full 5000 mAh is used.
