## Sal Glasser, the Spydiehole and the emergence of Spyderco


One of the most important individuals in the knife world is Sal Glesser. In 1967 he founded Spyderco with his wife Gail. In 1981 the first Spyderco pocket knife was produced, the C01 Worker. This knife stood out because of the round hole in the blade. Specifically made to open the knife with one hand. This hole, also called the Spydiehole, is, until today, still one of the most important features on a Spyderco knife.


It all started in a small converted van. With it they drove through the States to sell their products. Today Spyderco uses factories all over the world: China, Japan, Taiwan, Italy and, of course, the United States. Often in cooperation with world-famous knife makers and designers. They also supply knives to the U.S. Army and Spyderco is a first choice for many first responders. If that isn't an American success story, we don't know what is.


## Types of steel: only the best for a Spyderco knife


Spyderco is a master when it comes to types of steel. There is no other knife brand in the world that uses so many types of steel for its production knives. We often see types of steel like 8Cr13MoV, VG10, CTS-BD1N and CPM S30V. Premium and exotic types of steel like CPM REX45, Damascus, CPM S90V, Böhler M390, CPM CruWeaR and many more are used for the Spyderco Sprint Runs and Flash Batches. Looking for a completely stainless type of steel? If so the Salt collection with H1 and LC200N steel is the perfect choice for you.


Spyderco, however, doesn't stop there. The company also produces its own types of steel. Take, for instance, the in 2020 announced SPY27-steel. A cooperation with Crucible Industries. SPY27 steel is a stainless type of steel reinforced with cobalt. This steel is slightly better than the popular S30V and S35VN.

Spyderco is one of the largest and most famous knife brands in the world. Everyone has heard of the Spyderco Paramilitary 2, the Delica 4 or the Tenacious before.
