History of Otter
Otter Messer was founded around 1840 on a small farm on the Königsmühle in Solingen, using a traditional water-powered grinding mill. The name Otter comes from the fish otters that used to live on the banks of the streams and rivers in the Bergisches Land. Otter is mostly famous for their Mercator, a knife with cult status and a long history dating back to 1867. The pocket knives and fixed blades are crafted using traditional methods and carefully sharpened and finished by hand. The long-standing family business was taken over by a knife enthusiast called Frank Rommel in 2011. Otter knives still reflect the company's traditional past.
