Features of Opinel pocket knives
Carbon steel or stainless steel?
Opinel pocket knives are available in carbon steel and stainless steel. Knives made from carbon steel are not corrosion resistant. In fact, these knives are quick to discolour, and will even form rust if you don't maintain them. The main advantage of carbon steel is that it's very easy to sharpen and will hold a razor-sharp edge. You can recognize Opinel's carbon-steel pocket knives by their slightly darker handle and the 'Carbone' on the blade. Do you prefer a low-maintenance option? Choose a stainless Opinel pocket knife. You can recognize these knives by the 'Inox' on the blade.
Virobloc locking mechanism: classic Opinel
The Virobloc lock is a typical feature of an Opinel pocket knife. Marcel Opinel, the son of Joseph Opinel, wanted to improve the safety of the knives. That's why he invented the Virobloc system in 1955. This was initially meant to lock the knife in its open position. During the 1990s, the Virobloc system received an upgrade: the pocket knives could now also be locked when closed.
