Design
Just like in the old days, at Coutellerie Nontronnaise they work with French steel and wood as much as possible. The design has also remained pretty much the same over all these centuries. Nontron knives have a distinctive inverted V symbol that can be found on the blade and on the handle. The symbols are burnt into the wooden handle with the help of pyrography. This is still mostly done by hand. Which means that each handle, and each Nontron knife, will be unique!
Unfortunately, the exact meaning of this symbol has been lost over time. Is it a religious symbol? Do they refer to the compass of the Compagnons du Devoir? Regardless of the historical meaning, the charm of a Nontron knife is absolutely timeless!
