The Otter Mercator is a simple yet robust pocket knife. The Mercator is available in a wide range of handle materials. The blade is made from either 1.4034 stainless steel or C75 carbon steel. There are 2 types of locking mechanisms to choose from, a backlock for the Mercator large and a slipjoint for the Mercator small. The knives are available with a pocket clip on the right, or without a pocket clip. Its sleek and elegant minimalist design has a good reputation among knife fans around the world.
Otter Mercator: history
The history of the Otter Mercator dates back to 1867, which is when the knife was first developed. Soon, the knife became a beloved tool of soldiers of German Emperor Wilhelm II. It was handed out to the German soldiers during World War I. It became a cult object and souvenir among US soldiers returning from Germany after World War II.
Otter Mercator: the famous golden cat
Even today, a version of this knife is being produced with the famous golden cat with the mark K55K. The lines of the cat are painted by hand in real gold paint. The sign K55K printed on the handle represents Kaufmann, the original maker of the knife.
